Are Your Eyes Healthy?

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23

The eye is the lamp of the body..

The eye provides living organisms vision. It gives us the ability to receive and process visual detail. How can one small thing like the eye affect the whole body? How can what you perceive or focus on, impact everything? It is because all of your actions can influence it.

It is widely believed that your thoughts impact your feelings and behaviors. No wonder scripture says:

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy meditate on these things.” Phil 4:8

How we see things are very powerful. What we experience and do can impact our vision, making what was once healthy and full of light, blurry and holding room for darkness. While pondering on this one day I was challenged to think about what makes our eyes unhealthy. What makes our vision blurry? And this is what I found:

Sin.

Sin can make our vision blurry. It taints what is pure and righteous and can lead to following suit in our behaviors and decisions. Gossip destroys another persons image to us which can cause us to treat or see them differently. Premarital sex can lead you to not be sober in your relationship, bypassing red flags and sinning against your own body.

Wounds.

Past hurt and pain can make your vision blurry. Rejection, abuse, or any harmful act can cause you to make decisions and see the world differently based off what was done to you.

Anything not like God.

Self explanatory. If it is not like God it has the potential to take your gaze and pervert it.

Having healthy eyes leads us to be full of light. It leads us to living out a life that is Christlike and seeing the Father as we should. We will truly love God and love people the way we are intended to. If our eyes are unhealthy it will be the complete opposite. Incorporating some healthy spiritual habits can keep us on a healthy path.

Guard our gates (eyes and ears)- Things can’t impact us if they have no access to us.

Clean our own eyes- If there is an issue we deal with then we have to start taking steps to heal from those things. Whether forgiveness, a conversation, working on self esteem, etc. Its going to help us see and interpret things the right way.

Read your Word- God was so good to give us a physical template to help us have a biblical worldview on things. The word is exactly what we need to purify our thoughts and vision because it is breathed by the Holy Spirit.

Though it is easy to be distracted and influenced by this world, I don't want it to taint my vision. I want my eyes to be healthy and my body full of light. In that I will be challenged and so will you, to ask yourself, are your eyes healthy?

Until next time,

Jess
